Weekly TD-SCDMA Update September 15-21

- With an estimated value of over 30 billion RMB (US$4.4 billion; US$1=6.8 RMB), China Mobile announced on September 11 the commencement of the second-round bid for TD-SCDMA equipment. Via the bid China Mobile plans to purchase around 23,000 wireless base stations and 160,000 units of wireless carrier frequency equipment, with which China Mobile expects to expand its TD-SCDMA network to 28 other cities, including Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Taiyuan, Dalian, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Nanchang, Jinan, Wuhan, Changsha, Nanning, Kunming, Chongqing and Chengdu.

Meanwhile, China Mobile declared a goal to attain 400,000 TD-SCDMA subscribers by year-end 2008, the Beijing News reported on September 18. The company plans to accomplish the target in two phases. In the first phase, China Mobile expects to reach a total of 260,000 subscribers in the 10 TD-SCDMA trial cities before the end of the Paralympics Games on September 20. Through the second-phase mission, details of which are expected to be revealed soon, China Mobile aims to increase its overall subscriber base to 400,000 by the end of 2008.

- Chinese CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) chip maker Innofidei and TD-SCDMA chip maker T3G have jointly developed a low-cost CMMB/TD-SCDMA mobile phone module solution, leveraging on their respective proprietary technologies, Sohu IT News reported on September 19. The solution mainly targets feature phones with multimedia functionalities.

Aside from the collaboration with T3G, Innofidei has worked together with Datang Mobile on a CMMB/TD-SCDMA mobile TV demodulator chip for use in high-end Smartphones. The demodulator chip has been adopted by CMMB-enabled TD-SCDMA Smartphones co-developed by Coolpad and Innofidei.
